The Yankees got a big pitching effort from their big game pitcher, Andy Pettitte. Andy went eight strong innings while only giving up one earned run and four hits. Pettitte had 9 strike outs while not issuing a free pass to any of the Oakland batters. Jason Giambi has continued to prolonged hot streak. Giambi was 2 for 2 with a pair of walks to go along with the go ahead solo home run and an infield single. What are they going to do about Bobby Meacham? I don't think Larry Bowa made 2 mistakes all last year, let alone 2 in a weekend. Bowa is definitely missed.
Mariano Rivera came in for the 9th and got his 24th save in 24 chances, but it didn't happen without a screwy play. Oakland outfielder Ryan Sweeney was on first base when Bobby Abreu couldn't make the catch after dropping the ball on the transfer. Abreu then tried to throw the ball to Derek Jeter at short, but over threw him. Thank God that A-Rod was there backing up the throw and flipped it to Jeter for the out. Catcher Jose Molina then threw out Rajai Davis trying to steal second to end the game.
Brett Gardner needs to start hitting the ball on the ground. Gardner's speed is only effective when he hits the ball on the ground, not shallow fly balls to the outfielders. I think he is going to lose a lot of playing time when Johnny Damon comes off the Disabled List, maybe even get sent down. Gardner has to play every day, whether if its in New York or Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
